These are unique, one off handcrafted wooden spoons, carved from found or fallen wood using only three small hand knives.and a fret saw.
Each design is tailored to the idiosyncrasies of each piece of wood,
Each spoon takes many hours to produce
A unique gift for that special occasion or person in your life
If properly cared for this spoon will last a lifetime and beyond.
During its first year, the spoon should be oiled at least once with some form of vegetable oil while the wood stabilises. it would also be wise to occasionally oil the spoon if it’s in warm, dry conditions. have always loved trees and wood, and as a Welshman have always been aware of the carving of Welsh love spoons. The traditional, formal and mechanical nature of these spoons, to my eye, however, never inspired me to carve in this manner.
As a professional artist nature has always been my inspiration and although I paint landscapes, I have long been aware that the smallest flower of leaf can appear insanely beautiful to me. So with my Spoons, I decided to carve a little piece of nature in the form of leaves, acorns and other such things that I saw about me whilst out sketching and painting. I love the tactility of the wood and the fact that it can be carved with only two or three small knives.
It’s a very mediative process, and one gets lost in the movement of the knife and the slowly evolving forms that emerge as the wood shavings spiral away from a well sharpened blade.
It’s always a thrill to oil a newly finished spoon, but a disappointment too, as the journey is over, and you’ve got to now widen your focus from your hands and a piece of wood, out to the bigger world, with all that it throws at us.
